Kolby Kimball
Kolby has over six years of experience working in young adult programs and more than a decade of mentoring teens through coaching, leadership, and life skills development. He brings a strong mix of energy, empathy, and real-world insight to the work he does at Black Pines Life.
As co-founder and lead mentor, Kolby is often the first point of connection for new students. He plays an active role in onboarding, daily structure, and activity-based coaching. His passion is helping each young man build confidence, find purpose, and take meaningful steps toward independence. Every part of the journey matters, and Kolby is there to support them through it.

John Karren
With over 20 years of experience in wilderness therapy and young adult transition work, John brings a deep well of knowledge, calm leadership, and steady presence to Black Pines Life. He was part of the team at Second Nature and later became a founding owner of Elements Wilderness Program, where he helped shape the lives of countless young men.
At Black Pines, John plays a key mentoring role. He leads outdoor adventures, supports students in their job searches, and offers guidance in everyday life. For John, Black Pines is not just a program; it is a personal mission to help young men grow into confident and capable adults.
Program Operations, Curriculum Design
Janessa Kimball
Janessa brings a strong background in education and holds a master’s degree in curriculum design. With years of experience creating engaging, individualized learning experiences, she is passionate about helping young men build the life skills and confidence they need to thrive.
At Black Pines, Janessa oversees daily operations, designs curriculum rooted in real-world growth, and tracks each student’s progress. She ensures that every experience, from a cooking lesson to a service project, is aligned with our core values and phase-based structure. Her thoughtful and intentional approach helps turn everyday moments into meaningful opportunities for personal development.
